Windows 11 Migration Overview
This DEX Pack is designed to assist you with migrating to Windows 11 from the identification of systems, through the pace of the roll out.
It will help you:
-
Identify systems that are suitable for migration.
-
Determine applications that are currently troubled.
-
Monitor stability of applications during the migration.
-
Monitor the performance of systems being migrated.
-
Track the progress of the roll out.
-
Continue to monitor Windows 11 performance as build versions change.
NOTE: Data will display in this dashboard when the migration of devices begins. Best practice to migrate at least one machine in the last 30 days even if it is a test lab machine.
Value Proposition
This tool helps identify which hardware can be brought into a Windows 11 estate based on a comprehensive hardware discovery process. Performing an initial assessment, from “high tide to low tide,” is an effective way to determine which systems are suitable for a Windows 11 upgrade. Generally, most hardware estates should be compatible.
The upgrade options include:
-
In-Place Upgrade: Upgrading Windows 11 directly on the existing PC, retaining the operating system and data.
-
Bare Metal Rebuild: Wiping the machine completely and installing a fresh operating system.
IMPORTANT: We do not support the bare metal rebuild option.
A bare metal rebuild involves erasing the PC entirely and installing a new operating system, which is more disruptive than a factory reset. The Windows 11 in-place upgrade is highly effective, as it allows for pre- and post-upgrade comparisons. This comparison is valuable because SysTrack preserves the system ID and related data, enabling detailed analysis of system configurations before and after the upgrade.
IMPORTANT: The pre- and post-comparison functionality only works with in-place upgrades. If a system undergoes a bare metal rebuild, this comparison becomes irrelevant, as SysTrack cannot retain data from the original system setup. Therefore, it is essential to adopt a holistic approach when planning upgrades, focusing on what the upgrade will achieve and how to maximize the benefits of the in-place process.
Hardware Readiness
This dashboard supports early identification of systems that meet the requirements of Windows 11, as well as highlighting systems that may need replacement or upgrade to support Windows 11.
Readiness assessment is determined by comparing SysTrack data against the requirements defined by Microsoft. Early identification of systems not suitable can prep IT teams in understanding which models may become end of life.
Early identification of potential candidate systems for Windows 11 can help you to define early adopters and start the migration process.
NOTE: Data for this dashboard partially relies on a Collection Extension that must run on the systems you want to assess.
Where data already exists for a specific model, but is not available for an individual system, we use the values applicable to the model that we have already collected.
Application Stability
This dashboard allows you to initially understand the applications in your environment that may already be troubled so you can consider activities to improve those applications before migration occurs.
Once systems are migrated to Windows 11, it is important to continually monitor the stability of applications and their performance impact.
Performance Impact
This dashboard allows you to track the performance impact to systems being migrated to Windows 11. If you start early with your pilot systems and continually monitor the impact of migration, it will help to reduce any impact to your users as your migration increases.
Once systems are migrated to Windows 11, you can also use this dashboard to monitor the impact of moving to new builds of Windows 11 across a number of perspectives including user experience, system stability, resource utilization, and application performance. It also provides continued assessment of Windows 11 build performance.
Data will show in this dashboard when migration of devices begins. You will need at least one migrated device in the last 30 days to view data.
Migration Progress
This dashboard allows you to track the progress of migration activities across your enterprise and see how long it is taking.
